Since the last time, democratic institutions have faced a lack of legitimacy due to lower voter turnout in elections and declining participation in parliaments, parties and government. These issues have led to a broad international movement to reimagine democratic institutions and discover ways to engage citizens in the process of forming policies. This article offers a summary of a range of these innovations that are often referred to as “innovation democracy”.
The idea of innovation democracy includes several different mechanisms that are intended to encourage participation by citizens in the process of forming policies. They include town hall meetings, deliberative polling, public crowdsourcing and online forums for discussion. Some of these innovations come from the government, while others are initiated by the citizens and run by civic organizations or non-governmental organizations. Each of these innovations has one thing in common: they involve citizens and representatives from the state or other institutions.

It is generally accepted that innovation is the driving of economic growth. However, it’s not clear if different political systems create different types of innovation. The data suggests that democracies are more likely to have higher levels of innovation overall however, it is possible that innovative capability differs among countries due to differences in the political systems.
